The quick answer: most putters are sold at 33, 34 or 35 inches. A typical chart puts a golfer of 5’10″ to 6’0″ at a 34″ putter, 5’7″ to 5’9″ at 33½″, and 6’1″ to 6’4″ at 34½ to 35″. Then check: eyes over the ball, arms hanging naturally.
This is the height chart PGA TOUR Superstore publishes in its putter length guide. We couldn’t find a height chart for putters from any club maker, so treat this one as a retailer’s starting point:
Use it to pick the putter to try first, then check it with the setup test below. Two golfers of the same height can need different lengths: arm length, how much you bend from the hips and how far you stand from the ball all change it. That is why the setup check matters more than the chart.
It matters more than most golfers think. PING’s president said in 2018 that “Our research indicates eight out of 10 golfers are playing the wrong-length putters and losing strokes as a result.”
“Putter lengths typically range from 33 to 35 inches, with 35 inches often listed as the standard length by manufacturers.” In centimetres, 33, 34 and 35 inches are 83.8, 86.4 and 88.9 cm. If you bought a putter off the shelf without trying lengths, it is worth checking which one you have: the setup test below takes two minutes.
Putter length is measured differently from your other clubs. The USGA’s Equipment Rules: “For putters, the measurement of length is taken from the top of the grip along the axis of the shaft or a straight line extension of it to the sole of the club.” Every other club is measured with the sole against a 60° plane; see how in our golf club length by height guide.
Some putters remove the guesswork: PING’s Sigma 2 putters, launched in 2018, had an adjustable shaft that “allows players to alter the length of the Sigma 2 putter quickly and easily from 32″ to 36″”. GOLF.com added: “A full rotation of the tool lengthens or shortens the shaft by ¼””.

A club builder can cut a putter down or extend it. Shortening it makes the head feel lighter: as our swing weight chart notes, a club ½″ shorter loses about 3 to 5 swingweight points, so a builder may add head weight to keep the feel. Extending a putter works the other way and makes the head feel heavier. Either way, roll putts at the new length before you commit.
Putters are exempt from the 48-inch maximum. The Equipment Rules cap every club at 48 inches “for all clubs other than putters”, and the 46-inch local rule some elite events use also excludes putters. The rules set no maximum length for putters, so a broomstick or belly putter is legal.
What is not allowed is anchoring it. Rule 10.1b says “In making a stroke, the player must not anchor the club, either: Directly, by holding the club or a gripping hand against any part of the body (except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm), or Indirectly, through use of an “anchor point,” by holding a forearm against any part of the body to use a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club.” A long putter held away from the body, or a forearm-style putter braced against the lead forearm, is fine; resting the grip against your chest or belly is not.
A typical chart puts golfers of 5’10″ to 6’0″ at 34 inches, 5’7″ to 5’9″ at 33½, 5’3″ to 5’6″ at 33, and 6’1″ to 6’4″ at 34½ to 35. Confirm it with your setup: eyes over the ball, arms hanging naturally.
On the PGA TOUR Superstore height chart, a 34-inch putter fits golfers from 5’10″ to 6’0″. Below that the chart steps down to 33½ inches, and above it up to 34½ to 35. Check it with your setup before you buy.
Neither is better in general. 35 inches is the length most often listed as standard, but many golfers set up better with 34 or even 33. Pick the length that puts your eyes over the ball without choking down.
Most putters are sold at 33, 34 or 35 inches, and 35 inches is the length makers most often list as standard.
You choke down on the grip, your elbows bend out, or your eyes end up inside the ball line. A putter that is too long also tends to sit with the toe up at address.
Yes. Putters are exempt from the 48-inch limit on club length. What Rule 10.1b bans is anchoring: holding the club or a gripping hand against the body, or using a forearm as an anchor point, during the stroke.
Yes. A club builder can shorten it and refit the grip. Expect it to feel lighter: about 3 to 5 swingweight points per half inch removed, which head weight can put back.
