Golf club fitting chart: club length adjustment by golfer height

The quick answer: A golf club fitting chart matches your body and swing to club specs. Height and wrist-to-floor set your length and lie (5'9" – 6'0" with a 31" – 32.5" wrist-to-floor plays standard length and lie), and driver swing speed sets your shaft flex (Under 60 mph Ladies, 60–75 mph Senior, 75–95 mph Regular, 95–110 mph Stiff, Over 110 mph Extra Stiff). Both charts are below, followed by every detailed chart we publish, from shaft brands to golf balls.

Golf Club Fitting Chart: Length and Lie by Height

Your heightTypical wrist-to-floorIron length vs. standardLie angle vs. standard
Under 5'2″Under 28″−1″3–4° flat
5'2″ – 5'5″28″ – 29.5″−½″ to −¾″~2° flat
5'6″ – 5'8″29.5″ – 31″−¼″ to −½″~1° flat
5'9″ – 6'0″31″ – 32.5″StandardStandard
6'1″ – 6'3″32.5″ – 34″+½″~2° upright
6'4″ – 6'6″34″ – 35.5″+¾″ to +1″3–4° upright
Over 6'6″Over 35.5″+1″ or more4°+ upright

Wrist-to-floor is the better guide when it and your height disagree: two golfers of the same height can have arms of different lengths. Measure from the crease of your wrist to the floor, standing straight in flat shoes with your arms hanging relaxed. The full method, and a length for every club, is in our golf club length by height guide.

Shaft Flex by Swing Speed

Driver swing speedShaft flexTypical driver carry
Under 60 mphLadies (L)Under 150 yards
60–75 mphSenior (A)150–180 yards
75–95 mphRegular (R)180–220 yards
95–110 mphStiff (S)220–260 yards
Over 110 mphExtra Stiff (X)260+ yards

Flex is set mainly by driver swing speed, rather than handicap or age. If you don't know your speed, your driver carry distance is a good stand-in. Flex labels aren't standardized between brands, which is why the brand charts below matter. Full detail is in our swing speed and shaft flex chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is a golf club fitting chart?

A table that matches your measurements and swing to club specs. The most common version uses your height and wrist-to-floor measurement to set club length and lie angle; others match swing speed to shaft flex and weight.

How do I read a golf club fitting chart?

Find your height, then check your wrist-to-floor measurement on the same row. If both land on the same row, use that length and lie. If they disagree, go with wrist-to-floor. 5'9" – 6'0" with 31" – 32.5" wrist-to-floor is standard length and lie.

Is wrist-to-floor better than height for fitting golf clubs?

Yes, when they disagree. Wrist-to-floor accounts for arm length, so it predicts where your hands sit at address better than height alone.

What shaft flex do I need?

It depends on your driver swing speed: Under 60 mph, Ladies (L); 60–75 mph, Senior (A); 75–95 mph, Regular (R); 95–110 mph, Stiff (S); Over 110 mph, Extra Stiff (X).
