The quick answer: ALTA CB is PING’s counter-balanced stock graphite shaft. The G440 drivers come with ALTA CB Blue 50 (49–55g) and the G430 drivers with ALTA CB Black 55 (56–60g). Both come in Soft Regular, Regular and Stiff, and PING describes both as mid-high to high launch. The fairway versions are 65s, the hybrid versions 70s.
The number on the shaft is a weight class, not the weight: PING lists every flex separately, and a Blue 50 Stiff weighs 55g. Every weight and launch below is from the SHAFTS tab on PING’s own product pages. PING doesn’t publish torque or a swing-speed range for ALTA CB, so we haven’t made any up.
Weight and launch angle for each flex, as PING lists them, and the current PING clubs whose pages list each shaft:
PING’s G440 release names ALTA CB Blue as the stock shaft in the G440 driver, fairway woods and hybrids; on the G430 driver and fairway pages, PING bases standard length or swingweight on ALTA CB Black. The iron version has no number in its name; on the G440 and G740 irons PING pairs it with its AWT 3.0 steel shaft.
The Blue 50 is 5–7g lighter than the Black 55 in every flex, and PING’s description says why: “Counter-balanced PING ALTA CB Blue is lighter to help increase clubhead speed on a mid-high to high launch.” For the Black, PING says: “The ALTA CB Black offers mid-high to high launch.” The one launch difference in PING’s table is the Stiff: Mid High on the Blue 50, Mid on the Black 55.
PING also built the G440 driver longer with the Blue. Its launch release: standard length is “46″ (Alta CB Blue 50); 45 1/2″ (PING Tour 2.0 Chrome/Black and optional stock).”

Outside the driver, PING lists the same weights and launch for Blue and Black. The ALTA CB Blue 65 and Black 65 both weigh 56g / 58g / 62g (Soft Regular / Regular / Stiff), and the Blue 70 and Black 70 both weigh 69g / 73g / 76g. In both, the launch goes from High in Soft Regular to Mid in Stiff. The hybrid 70s are also listed on the iDi (Blue 70) and iCrossover (Black 70) driving irons.
PING’s other in-house shafts are the Tour 2.0 Chrome and Tour 2.0 Black. They add an X-Stiff flex, drop the Soft Regular, and launch lower. PING’s description: “Tour 2.0 Black is low launch and low spin, a good fit for higher swing speeds. Tour 2.0 Chrome delivers a low-mid to mid ball flight with control and precision.”
Note that PING lists the same shaft names at different weights on its driver and fairway pages: the Tour 2.0 Chrome 65 is 56g / 61g / 66g on the driver pages and 52g / 57g / 61g on the fairway pages, and the Tour 2.0 Black 65 is 60g / 66g and 55g / 61g. Read the weight off the table for your club, not off the number on the shaft.
If your PING driver, fairway, hybrid or iron says HL, the shaft is ALTA Quick, not ALTA CB. The HL pages list ALTA Quick and nothing else. PING’s reason for the lighter build: it is there “so players with slower swing speeds can generate more clubhead speed to produce faster ball velocity and higher launch.” ALTA Quick comes in 35 and 45 flex:
PING doesn’t publish a swing speed for Soft Regular, Regular or Stiff in ALTA CB, so we don’t give one here. For flex by driver speed, use our swing speed shaft flex chart, or put your speed into the free Shaft Flex Calculator. What PING’s tables do show: within each ALTA CB shaft, the softer flex is lighter and launches higher, and the Tour 2.0 shafts are the next step down in launch.
PING’s current pages don’t list an ALTA CB Red at all, and list ALTA CB Slate on one club, the ChipR wedge: Regular flex, 72g, Mid High launch. If the shaft in your PING says Red or Slate, it came on an older model, and PING’s current pages don’t give its specs, so we don’t list any.
SR is Soft Regular, the softest of the three ALTA CB flexes (Soft Regular, Regular, Stiff). It is also the lightest: an ALTA CB Blue 50 weighs 49g in Soft Regular, 51g in Regular and 55g in Stiff, according to PING.
ALTA CB is PING’s own shaft. PING lists it under “PING-engineered shafts” and calls the ALTA CB Black “our proprietary ALTA CB Black.”
Blue is on the G440 clubs and Black on the G430 clubs. In the driver, the Blue 50 is 5 to 7 grams lighter than the Black 55 in every flex. In the fairway woods and hybrids, PING lists the same weights and launch for both.
Counter-balanced. PING’s G440 launch release lists the stock driver shaft as “PING Alta CB (counter-balanced) Blue 50.”
Not by PING’s standards: its stock G440 driver shaft, the ALTA CB Blue 50, weighs 49 to 55 grams. If you want a heavier PING shaft, the Tour 2.0 Chrome 65 is 56 to 66 grams in the driver. Our shaft weight guide explains how to match weight to your swing.
PING’s High Launch (HL) build uses the ALTA Quick shaft, which weighs 38g in the 35 flex, and PING says the HL build is for players with slower swing speeds. Its women’s G Le4 driver, with the ALTA Le shaft, is designed for swing speeds of 80 mph or less.
